BOTOX®️ is an injectable treatment designed to reduce the appearance of fine lines and facial wrinkles. This treatment uses botulinum toxin type A which blocks nerve signals in order to relax facial muscles and prohibits certain muscle movements. While BOTOX® is commonly known as a cosmetic treatment, it also has been FDA-approved to treat TMJ Syndrome, headaches, migraine pain, and facial pain if administered on a regular basis.
More recently, it has been discovered that BOTOX® can also be used as a treatment for TMJ Disorder (TMD), and bruxism. When BOTOX® is administered into the affected head and neck muscles, it relaxes the muscles and reduces or eliminates facial pain. By doing this, it can alleviate jaw tension, muscle spasms, tension headaches, and teeth grinding.
TMJ refers to the temporomandibular joint. This joint acts as a sliding hinge connecting your jawbone and your skull. When the TMJ joint dysfunctions, or becomes inflamed from trauma, wear and tear, or a misaligned bite, it can cause jaw and facial pain, headaches, and earaches.
Bruxism, or teeth grinding, is often a closely related condition to TMJ. It causes excessive wear and pressure on the teeth and jaw. Bruxism occurs most often at night while you’re asleep, but it can also occur during the day when you don’t even realize it. Stress is usually the contributing factor.
Both TMJ and Bruxism can cause permanent damage to your jaw joints and teeth if left untreated. But don’t worry! Aurentz Family Dentistry has a solution right here in Rockwall.
BOTOX® for TMJ therapy involves little to no discomfort, only takes a few minutes to administer, and will remain effective for up to 3 months. Pain symptoms may return as soon as 3 months after your initial treatment. With a series of treatments, BOTOX® can retrain the muscles to relax and you will notice your symptoms resolve for longer periods of time.
Most patients tolerate BOTOX® well and can go about their day immediately after treatment. You should begin to feel the effects within a couple of days, but the maximum benefits take effect after approximately one week.
